Stephen Shortell, PhD, our founding director, recently published a new health system taxonomy in Health Services Research. This article aims to build off of and update the health system taxonomy published twenty years ago to “inform emerging public policy and practice developments” (Shortell et al). The new taxonomy bears similarities and differences to the original and highlights the transition to value-based payment models, continued consolidation, and the growing importance of the social determinants of health” (Shortell et al).
