A new research brief on palliative care was recently released by the Berkeley Forum, a collaborative effort involving executive leadership of major health insurers, health care delivery systems, the state of California, and health policy experts from the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. The Berkeley Forum finds that California hospital spending could be reduced by billions of dollars over the next eight years if patients’ palliative care wishes were honored. In particular, the report promotes expanding access to community-based palliative care and better incorporating conversations about palliative care into the healthcare delivery system.
